Dracula 4: Scars of Dracula

1970       Christopher Lee

For the sixth time in 13 years, Christopher Lee dons his famous black cloak and becomes the evil Count Dracula once more in "Scars of Dracula" . As his title implies, Dracula is of noble birth, and it is a nice coincidence that Christoper Lee, too, has noble blood in his veins. His full name is Christopher Frank Carandini Lee and the Carandinis are one of Italy's oldest families, famous since the 10th century. They are part of the Black Nobility, claiming descent from Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire. Lee was born in London on May 27, 1922. He was educated at Wellington College, where he distinguished himself in the Classics. He is fluent in eight languages, which enables him to film almost anywhere in the world, and he has made innumerable pictures in Europe, playing each role in the language of the relative country. During the war he served in the R.A.F. After the war he caught the acting bug. He appeared in Olivier's "Hamlet," Scott of the Antarctic," ''Captain Horatio Horn-blower,"

"Moulin Rouge," "The Crimson Pirate." He took up boxing and fencing to keep fit and be ready for any costume parts that might come along. In "The Truth About Women" with Laurence Harvey, he got a big comedy role. Shortly after came the turning point of his career-and he never played comedy again! Hammer Films in 1956 were just about to begin their amazing success with horror subjects. They were searching for a tall actor to play the Creature in "The Curse of Frankenstein." He got the part and the rest is history. "Dracula" came next and the enormous success of these subjects sealed his fate. "The Mummy," "The Hound of the Baskervilles," "Corridors of Blood," "The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll," "City of the Dead," "The Hands of Orlac," "Taste of Fear," "Pirates of Blood River," "The Gorgon," "She," were films that followed and then he gained another huge success with his interpretation of "Dr. Fu Manchu." Now in tremendous demand all over the continent, he has made scores of films where his command of languages made anxious producers into happy ones. In 1961 he married a beautiful Danish actress and model, Birgit Kroencke. They have a seven year-old daughter, Christina, and live in London. "Scars of Dracula" was produced by Aida Young. Directed by Roy Ward Baker. It is a Hammer Production in Technicolor for Anglo EMI and is distributed by Continental Films.
