Sylvia

1970       Joanna Bell

Sylvia is a racy, action-packed, fast-moving, in-depth study about severely aberrated human behavior

Not since "Three Faces of Eve" has a film attempted to so clearly define a true history of multiple personality.

Sylvia D'Constant (Joanna Bell) is seemingly a quiet, reserved, saintly person living on a quiet, reserved well-manicured Street in upper-middle class suburbia.

Sylvia's cousin, Toby, (PAM SERVANT), on summer vacation from college, arrives with her school chum Sheila (HELEN MADIGAN), and finding the front door partly ajar, walks in to see a nude man and a woman in a sizzling lover's embrace on the living room rug.

Toby is shocked beyond words, but; Sheila, a swinger, finds it excitingly humorous and, still unnoticed by the lovers, tugs the perplexed Toby back out the door They park up the street and, finally, the man leaves.

Toby and Sheila re-enter the house to find a simply dressed girl in abject prayer, kneeling before a beautiful home-made altar

"Who is 'she'?" asks the now perplexed Sheila. "'She' is

Sylvia," murmurs the completely confused Toby. Sylvia finally notices the two arrivals and, greeting both warmly, makes them at home.

While Sylvia and Toby get reacquainted with discussions of the past and Toby learns from Sylvia about her doctor's opinion that Sylvia has been diagnosed as having psychological problems, Sheila blusters into the room, semi-nude from the shower

Toby notices a strange reaction in Sylvia, but Sylvia composes herself and suggests they all take a nap and that she has cocoa warming. Sylvia puts a drug into one of the cups and gives it to Toby, putting Toby into a deep sleep.

Sheila is awakened from her nap to find a cigar-smoking Butch lesbian at her bed and, after laughingly realizing that it is really Sylvia - readily joins in Sylvia's intent.

In the morning, Sheila awakens Toby from her drug-induced sleep and, as they make their way down to breakfast, they are taken aback by the sight of Sylvia again in humble abject prayer before the altar.

Sheila, unable to contain herself, bursts out laughing. Toby turns on her furiously and Sheila, in defense, relates that she and Sylvia "got it on" the previous night.

Toby, now beside herself, demands that Sheila leave the house, wh!ch Sheila angrily does. Toby rushes out to the Rectory to see, her friend the Monsignor (ARMAND PETERS).

The Monsignor relates an incident (seen in flashback) wherein Sylvia viciously seduces a lay-brother studying for the priesthood right in the church rectory. He also states that it is possible that Sylvia is demon-possessed, but does not recommend exorcism until all other alternatives are tried, such as in-depth psychological probing, shock treatment. etc.

Toby hurries to Doctor Balaban (JOHN SALVATOR), Sylvia's psychiatrist and learns the worst. Sylvia is definitely a splintered, multiple personality - and here we see, in flashback, the many manifestations of her dissociated selves ... including Mona, a volcanic, seething demon, living only for sexual pleasure and mischievously intruding herself into the lives of all other manifestations.

We also see, as the film proceeds from this point, how Mona, with the help of two 'Junkies," whom she met at a wild orgy and whom she keeps supplied with drugs, set up the murder of Doctor Balaban. She claims this is self-defense, for, if the doctor succeeds in curing Sylvia, it will surely mean the death of Mona.

From the opening of this film, the viewer becomes involved in the gamut of intrigue, twists, turns, and always the unexpected as we experience Sylvia.
